Locate the overflow before choosing the trade

Water spilling over a roof gutter, leaking from a downspout joint and backing up at the ground connection are different observations. A gutter or roof problem may need a roofing or gutter contractor. Tell WNPD if the concern is the underground drain or water collecting around the foundation.

Information that makes an enquiry clearer

Note which side of the house is affected, whether one downspout or several overflow, and whether the problem occurs only in heavy rain. Photograph the ground connection and nearby pooling from a safe, dry position. Include any known drainage drawings or previous work.

Check the destination, not just the opening

A clear visible opening does not establish that the buried line and its outlet are working. An assessment may need to trace accessible parts of the route and consider connections to the wider drainage system. Ask what can be confirmed and which sections remain out of view.

Avoid creating a new runoff problem

Before disconnecting or rerouting a downspout, confirm the appropriate arrangement for the property and local requirements. Do not send water toward a neighbour, foundation or walking route. What to ask about the proposed work

Ask whether the scope covers the gutter, above-ground downspout, underground pipe or outlet. Clarify access, any inspection limitations and how flow will be checked afterward. If an underground line is damaged, discuss the repair rather than assuming repeated clearing will resolve it.
